Monthly prayers

This month's prayers are taken from worship material produced by Eco-Congregation Scotland that follows the World Council of Churches theme, 'Joining the Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace'.

They are written to help prepare and equip churches to respond to the key UN climate talks due to take place in Paris in early December.

This material covers the four Sundays from 6 to 27 September, and follows the Revised Common Lectionary readings for September; with a particular emphasis on the Gospel readings which feature Jesus journeying on the road.

The material has been written by an ecumenical group, with contributors from the Church of Scotland, the Methodist Church, the Scottish Episcopal Church and the United Reformed Church.

6 September (Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost)

God of love,
guide us through the wilderness of our lives.
Be present through all the temptations, trials, and troubles of this life,
and nourish us with streams of living water flowing from your Word.
Open up our imagination and determination,
to make us instruments of your justice,
and loving companions to the persecuted and the oppressed,
so that in our actions we may restore a just order to all your creation.

13 September (Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost)

Creator of street and field, of noise and peace;
we thank you that you walk beside us in every situation.
Friend who trod City Street, preached in the market place
and challenged the powerful without compromise; inspire us.
Spirit of life, fill our dwellings, towns and cities with your grace, justice and peace.
In busyness and calm, in grime and beauty, in trade and debate,
may we glorify creation in all that we do and wherever we go;
inspired by our hope in the heavenly city where all creation will find harmony.

20 September (Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost)

God of love,
you invite us to draw near to you,
to listen to your words that we might learn from your ways.
Hear the voices of the vulnerable;
and welcome all in your name.
As we come together before you,
open our hearts to honestly share our hopes, our fears and our confusion with you;
that we might be changed and made new through your love.

27 September (Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost)

Lord Jesus Christ,
who affirmed all who do good deeds in your name,
even in the sharing of a cup of water.
Grant to us
the wisdom to see the way forward for your people and this planet,
the courage to choose the right path;
and the will to share this way with others.

Prayer for December

Gracious God, send us your grace this Advent Season so that we can

prepare for your coming. Touch our hearts with longing so that we

can better love and serve you and each other. Fill us with the hope

that we can be transformed by your Spirit and so help transform

the world. Give us the peace of knowing that you came to share our

human life and redeem us for the sake of love. We ask these things in

the name of Jesus whose kingdom we seek.

Look down, O Lord, from your heavenly throne, and
illumine this night with your celestial brightness; that by
night as by day your people may glorify your holy Name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
