Message-page 03

November is the month when we in Northern Europe begin to experience the shorter hours of light and the longer hours of darkness. It is an evocative time; the sun is setting lower in the west and the long shadows of mid-day remind us how low the sun is in the sky. In the UK British Summer Time (BST) gives way to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) as our clocks go back an hour. It begins to feel like winter.

In the Bible the contrast between light and darkness, day and night is used as way of contrasting well known human fears and failings; the night/darkness is seen as a time of immorality and sin or of ignorance and foolishness. By contrast the light/day is seen as representing purity and wisdom. Genesis reminds us that God made the light and the dark, there is nowhere God is not present. The God who made the stars to shine also set the planets on there courses so that they will experience day and night, light and darkness.

As Christians we read a lot about this contrast in Paul’s letters. He uses phrases like ‘Children of light’, ‘belonging to the day not the night’. Paul is playing with the imagery of contrast to show the contrast in each human heart between goodness and right living and sin and immorality.

1 Thessalonians  5. 4-8
5 I don’t need to write you about the time or date when all this will happen. 2 You surely know that the Lord’s return[a] will be as a thief coming at night. 3 People will think they are safe and secure. But destruction will suddenly strike them like the pains of a woman about to give birth. And they won’t escape.
4 My dear friends, you don’t live in darkness, and so that day won’t surprise you like a thief.5 You belong to the light and live in the day. We don’t live in the night or belong to the dark. 6 Others may sleep, but we should stay awake and be alert. 7 People sleep during the night, and some even get drunk. 8 But we belong to the day.
Ephesians 5:8
You used to be like people living in the dark, but now you are people of the light because you belong to the Lord. So act like people of the light
2 Corinthians 4:6
The Scriptures say, “God commanded light to shine in the dark.” Now God is shining in our hearts to let you know that his glory is seen in Jesus Christ.
May the light of Christ shine in our hearts and lives and illuminate us and those whom, we meet. And we also need to be aware of the darkness within each human heart, including our own, that we may know the full experience of our humanity.

Prayer for December

Gracious God, send us your grace this Advent Season so that we can

prepare for your coming. Touch our hearts with longing so that we

can better love and serve you and each other. Fill us with the hope

that we can be transformed by your Spirit and so help transform

the world. Give us the peace of knowing that you came to share our

human life and redeem us for the sake of love. We ask these things in

the name of Jesus whose kingdom we seek.

Look down, O Lord, from your heavenly throne, and
illumine this night with your celestial brightness; that by
night as by day your people may glorify your holy Name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
