Those of us who braved the snow (!) and made it to church on Sunday heard a very important message from our lay reader Adeola. In her semon she explored the story of Jesus kicking out the merchants and money changers from the temple courts of Jerusalem (John 2: 13-25). There are a couple of important lessons for us today. First, we too may find ourselves angry, but we should make sure that our anger is directed against sin and injustice (like Jesus' anger here). Second, in this season of Lent, we should make sure that our own individual temple is cleansed of sin. What bad habits have been creeping up on us? What sins have we forgotten about?
These are important questions that we should all think about this week. But when we identify such sins we do not need to fight them on our own. The story does not end with our sins, but with Christ's sacrifice for us on the cross and His Easter triumph bringing us back to God.
